Why paper works when the app did not
An app tells you the money is gone after it is gone. An envelope tells you before, because you can see the paper getting thinner. That is the whole mechanic and it is why cash stuffing keeps working for people who have already given up on three budgeting apps.
How to use it
- Print the sheet and cut along the outer line.
- Fold along the crease and tape the two short sides. Leave the top open.
- Write the amount you are giving that category this month on the front.
- Take the cash out in one trip, on payday, and fill every envelope at once.
- When an envelope is empty, that category is done until next payday. That is the point.

Questions
Do I have to use real cash?
No. Plenty of people run these as digital envelopes and just write the numbers in. The paper version works better for most beginners because seeing it is the whole trick, but the sheet does not care.
What if I spend an envelope early?
Then you have learned what that category actually costs, which is worth more than a tidy month. Write the real number on next month’s envelope and carry on.
